With heavy hearts, we have recently learned of the passing of Martha Ruth Kirker Jones (1928-2023), a cherished former Bensenville Library staff member. Martha's enduring contributions include initiating the local history collection and leading a profound oral history project that captured the essence of life in Bensenville during the early 20th century. Her literary work, the "Bensenville" little red book, and engaging programs further enriched our understanding of Bensenville's history. We say goodbye to a remarkable colleague whose passion for preserving our community's heritage will forever be remembered and cherished. May Martha rest in eternal peace, and may her legacy continue to inspire us all.⁠

Last night's Winter Sowing event was a blast! Excited to see our seeds bloom in spring - if you attended last night's program we would love to see your progress in the springtime!

For those unfamiliar with winter sowing, it is a gardening method where seeds are sown in containers outdoors during the winter months. The seeds are planted in mini greenhouses created from recycled materials like milk jugs or plastic containers. These makeshift containers protect the seeds from harsh winter conditions while allowing them to experience natural temperature fluctuations. This process takes advantage of the stratification, or natural cold treatment, that certain seeds require to germinate successfully in the spring. Winter sowing is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to start seeds, fostering hardier plants that are better adapted to local conditions.

This is one of the many photos discovered in a Bensenville home in 2021, tucked away on top of a heating duct wrapped in newspapers. The collection consists of family pictures of Meyer Gordon, his wife Rose Lipman, and their two children Kenneth and Paulette, circa 1880s, and the 1900s through the 1940s.⁠

After researching the small clues from writing on the pictures it was discovered that both Meyer and his son Kenneth were notorious fencing criminals in Chicago, wanted by the Feds on numerous occasions. Meyer died in a Missouri prison hospital in 1954 and his son Kenneth was gunned down on the north side in 1963. ⁠
